Conclusion

|CONCLUSION OF UNIT|

When I first started this unit I had no belief in designing for menswear, I saw Toms work of what he had done in James Long and how he did his designing and I was thinking that I would really be starting out designing for women.

Starting off being Group 1 was difficult because we had little time to create a theme idea to show to Tom, which made us panic and choose at a rush, but he ended up liking one of the pictures we presented to him so we stuck to that after-wards.
As a group, we created a Pinterest board and I feel like that really helped us all to see what ideas we all had and what we could bring up in conversation when we met up what we like and what we didn't like.

Our theme changed when we all watched the movie Train-spotting, because whilst watching the film we took screen shots of interesting parts where we saw the interior and exterior of the housing they were in, when we got a good picture of some of the garments they were wearing and when there were some clear shots of Ewan’s face for our muse research.

After Ashleigh came up with some interesting prints we finally figured out what colours we would be sticking to and when the prints came together with different colours it really helped us with designing and collaging as it gave us a load of ideas for what we can do next for the line-up and garment designs.

The few things I enjoyed about this unit was working for menswear, after drawing and designing for men I realised that it was quite easy to get the hang of, and it has given me the idea of possibly, maybe designing using a hint of masculinity for year 3.
The group work was hard to get used to at first because of how different it was to work with TIP and Fine Art.

Also along with having one of our fashion member go on a placement after the first week or so of the unit then a member of textiles drop out of the unit, I felt like as a group only having 4 of us in made it just a little bit more difficult for us to have a lot of work as a group.

Another point for this unit was the workshops and I felt like we would have done so much better in sample wise if we had been able to attend the workshop if we wasn't inducted as I felt it restricted us completely because we didn't have a member inducted in knit, so that opportunity for us wasn't reached. I wish that it could have been possible as one of our group members missed out on creating knit samples for our group, I think the reasoning was one of the textiles girls who was inducted in knit, didn't fully attend until she dropped out, meaning no other member was able to then take that knit workshop.

After the final presentation with Tom I have learned so much about designing and working towards a designer, having his point of view voiced out to us helped us realise what we had done right and what we had done wrong and I feel like that will help me through to year 3.
On the other hand, working on a group file and then a personal file, I felt I struggled because I focused so much on working towards presenting in the group file than my own work, but the blog has helped me to look back on how my work progressed.

Final Line Up

|FINAL LINE-UP|

These are the final line-ups we have done, I illustrated them, Elly doing the face, then I traced over, and then myself and Hope placed all of the prints on the garments on Photoshop.
We decided to go with the clean look of print placement instead of the collaging.

Exhibition Installation and Thursday Exhibition

|EXHIBITION|

The day of the instalment and exhibition we brought all of the samples and our group file full of our work to the London Scottish House.

We put our work up on string and spaced it out in-between other groups work, then put our file opposite the work.

Presentation to Tom

PRESENTATION TO TOM |JAMES LONG|

When we presented we laid out all of our fabric samples on the desk and then showed our sketchbook to Tom and went through the pages one by one.
We was originally going to print all of the sheets onto cartridge paper, but over disagreement in the group, we ended up not doing, which was the reason for our first page to be the only page on cartridge. I feel like we also

One of the problems I think we had to start of with was the plastic wallets, one of our members bought it and I felt like it would have been better in a clip bound wallet and with fabric swatches next to the illustrations instead of the scan.

After his feedback it became really clear how we just wasnt showing off our designs properly, next time I will make sure to think about the shirt underneath the jacket and what is underneath what is hidden. Because it is important to make sure you see every detail front, back and side of the garment, sometimes inside and out if its an over jacket/coat.

I really appreciate his honest comments because it does make me realise so much we've missed and could have done.

Presentation of samples 27th April

Presentation

After the workshop we presented our samples what we had done so far. We needed to have more softer fabrics because some of them were too thick.
We also narrowed down some of our favourite ones that we wanted to keep and use for our final line-up.

Final Fabrics

More Photography images

More blue/green images of architectural buildings, to use for print ideas, textures.

Pin-up Crit 25th April

Pin-up of all work so far |Group Work|

Once we pinned up all of our work it made so much sense where everything was going, and our designs came along well with the research we had got, we wrote down a list of things we needed to work on, which was more collage work, more sampling and more use of colour in some of the designs.

When we put up the work, I got good feedback on my illustrations that I had done.
I really felt like collaging during the workshop helped to get out a design really quickly and still have the feeling that its coming together more visually.

Workshop 18th April

Range Building and Finishings

For this workshop we needed to work on the range and what garments we will and wont have in the final line up. Because we was to do technical drawings, we thought about drawing from those that we had, to create more of a fluid line of different garments all together on a figure.
Once we had decided on what garments we wanted I did front and back flats of the garments one by one using Illustrator and a drawing tablet.

Once I had done the flats we drew from them and created looks by mixing them up. (There was also two of us doing technical drawings so the style differentiates.)

Workshop - Hand Techniques

|HAND TECHNIQUES|

When we all chose a workshop I originally put myself down for 3D Textiles but I swapped workshops with a group member that didn't come in for personal reasons.

We was taught by Lynn about hand stitching and quilting, along with many different techniques used to sew clothing and fabrics.
She showed us some hand made jackets and head-wear that had hand stitches in vertical and horizontal lines down the fabric to hold it in place and to give it strength and padding, but also to add a pattern to the piece.
I really found this interesting as some of the samples she showed us looked lovely and detailed, but when it came to doing a few of my own I didn't know how I could incorporate the theme from our group as we hadn't decided on a solid colour pallet and patterns, the prints that we had as a group were all very tough and I wasn't able to sew into them with my needle, the prints were very bright and the thread wouldn't show up very well.

I did a couple samples with the fabrics I had with me to practice quilting.

Photography of buildings/architecture

PHOTOS TAKEN FOR SKETCHBOOK

After thinking about going for a certain colour to work with I chose yellows and oranges at first so I went out and took some images of buildings that have a repeat pattern in them, because of the relation to the council houses in train-spotting and the colours in the windows.
